For the fourth year in a row, the Douglas MacArthur Elementary School PTA participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service by organizing a local food drive to benefit an Alexandria food bank. Volunteers collected nonperishable food on the front lawn of the school from 1 to 3 p.m. on Jan. 16. The efforts by students, their families and MacArthur second-grade Brownie Troop 4198 yielded 20 full boxes of food, which volunteers delivered to the Grace Episcopal Food Pantry.
MacArthur observes monthly Character Pillars, including the Pillar of Fairness in January to honor the birthday of Dr. King. As a tribute, students and staff wore the designated color of fairness, orange, on Jan. 17.
